Twin pregnancies are still quite rare, despite a 72% increase in their probability between 1980 and 2018. Twins are born in around 33 out of 1,000 births.
What are the probabilities of having identical twins? On average, out of 1,000 births, three to four are identical twins. So again, this is not very common.
Savannah Combs, 23, was thrilled to learn she was expecting twins. She then discovers that they both have Down syndrome, which is also unusual.
Of course, the information was shocking. Savannah and her husband Justin Ackerman were aware that because of her illness and the condition of her children, some people would judge them.
But Savannah thinks it’s the same thing that makes them so beautiful.
“What they have is very rare, but these are my little gems,” she said.
Savannah, a Middleburg, Florida native, posted videos of her postpartum journey on TikTok with her children Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman, and the videos immediately gained popularity.
Savannah stated in one of her videos that she was advised to abort her children because they would not survive.
She made the choice to keep them and give them a chance.
“Every [prenatal] appointment that they were alive was a blessing to me,” Savannah said.
Her partner was away at boot camp when she discovered they both had Down syndrome.
When Savannah was admitted to the hospital, she was 29 weeks pregnant and gave birth to twin daughters. Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman, identical twin daughters, were born on May 12, 2021.
The twins had to spend a few weeks in the NICU before going home because they were born two months early.
“They’re called mono di twins, which means they had their own sacks, but they shared the same placenta, which meant they were going to be identical,” she said.
“Mo di twins as they are, it’s very rare. And then, on top of that, we add Down syndrome, it’s like one person in two million. »
According to Savannah, they are like any other young people, although they have a rare disease.
“They have feelings. Their hearts are beating. They know how to speak. They know how to do the things you do. They will get there,” she said.
“As I said, it may be a step backwards but they will do it. I learned that these children are courageous and happy little things.
Savannah posts wonderful updates on TikTok as each young person continues to achieve their goals.
“I’m going to let them know that they’re just like us and they’ll achieve it as long as they put their mind to it.”
Nonetheless, some people feel compelled to criticize Savannah and her family. The young mother was therefore forced to respond to extremely cruel people on social networks.
“I wouldn’t want these babies; if mine came out like this, they would be adopted directly,” one person wrote to the mother.
Savannah, however, had the perfect answer, which she posted on Facebook.
“I said, fortunately they were not born from you but from me. God knew what he was doing in giving these babies to the good parents who would love them regardless.
