Liang Zifu and Li Suing, a Chinese couple, joined their destinies sixty years ago. At that time, lacking financial resources and a place to take shelter, they could hardly afford to buy a home or even pay rent. That’s how this couple made their family nest within a cave.
Under the rocky vaults, they crafted a bedroom, a kitchen, and a living space. Over the years, they even shared their cave with poultry and pigs. Their meals were mainly composed of fruits and vegetables. They traded their clothes and various essential items in the nearby village for meat and eggs.
As the years went by, the family grew with the arrival of their children, whom Li gave birth to right there in the cave. Once their sons and daughters became adults, they left this refuge to settle in the city, but their parents chose to stay on site.
When provincial authorities became aware of their situation, they offered them an apartment in the city where their children live. However, the 86-year-old husband and his 81-year-old wife politely declined this offer. They explained that they had become attached to their way of life in the cave over the decades. They cherish the peace and privacy they have found there. That’s why they refuse to break this marital idyll by leaving their beloved cave.”
