When the photo of this dog digging a hole in front of a tombstone first made its way around the internet, people thought she was mourning her deceased owner and wanted to see her owner again. But the truth was quite different. The photographer who took the picture is Vesna Mihajloski, who lives in Serbia.
She approached the grave to see why the dog had been digging a hole – and made a wonderful discovery. It turns out that the dog didn’t want to dig the grave at all. She had dug the hole for another reason entirely. She recently gave birth to four puppies. The mother dog was not grieving for her lost owner at all, but was just a street dog looking for a shelter for her puppies. She was weak and bloated, so Vesna took her food and water. After gaining the dog’s trust, Vesna took the whole family home.
Finally, the puppies and their mother were safe and no longer needed to freeze in a graveyard. The puppies were finally able to nurse peacefully and grew quickly. Vesna took them to the vet to make sure the whole family was healthy and to have them sterilized. This way, they could no longer have puppies that could have ended up on the street.
