Actor Zach Galifianakis helped a homeless woman get back to a decent life, paying for her housing for years. Since their meeting, they have forged a very beautiful friendship.
Zach Galifianakis is the famous actor who played the role of Alan Garner in the Very Bad Trip trilogy . While still unknown to the general public and working at a cafe in Santa Monica, he noticed an old woman in the laundromat across the street from the cafe.
“I noticed that this 80-year-old woman seemed to spend all her nights in the laundromat. I saw her working in the laundromat every day and wondered how she could be so happy all the time. She always sang for the customers. I started making Mimi’s coffee every day, and we became friends ,” the actor said.
The woman was none other than Elizabeth Haist, also nicknamed Mimi. Now 96 years old, the old woman had just divorced and lost her job when she took refuge in the laundromat, having no more accommodation. One cold, rainy night, the laundromat manager allowed Mimi to sleep in his business, a habit she kept for nearly 20 years. By helping customers wash their clothes, she managed to survive to buy food.
After the success spawned by Very Bad Trip , Zach Galifianakis decided to use his earned money to help his friend in need. Thus, the actor gave him an apartment, which he paid the rent and utilities for years.
“I have a place to live now, and my own bed. I get money from social security, so it helps me pay for my food and my phone bill. I still go to the laundromat, every day. I do my own laundry, of course. I go there to keep busy and teach people how to wash their clothes ,” said Mimi, who has not forgotten where she came from.
On the opening night of the second installment of The Very Bad Trip , Zach Galifianakis decided to take Elizabeth Haist with him. A limo pulled up outside the old lady’s apartment, looking like she was a celebrity. Since then, Mimi regularly participates in social events.
“If he’s in town, he’ll pick me up. Otherwise, he lets me take a friend with me. I dress elegantly and a friend helps me with makeup. It’s fun, and it’s something I never dared to dream of. When they throw a party somewhere nearby, I meet stars there and drink Martini with a twist of lemon and vodka. Then the limo takes me home ,” Mimi said.
Since then, thanks to her appearances with the actor , Mimi has become a celebrity and some people recognize her. This moving anecdote confirms the fine reputation of Zach Galifianakis, who remained a man with a big heart and faithful to his friends despite the fame.
