In Saint-Malo, a couple chose to name their baby boy Hades. A disputed choice of first name which was finally authorized by the courts.
Kristina Desgres and Rodrigo Velasques, aged 28 and 35 respectively, had a baby boy on September 19, 2022, in Saint-Malo. However, a few months after the birth of their child, the parents found themselves in court. The reason ? The name given to the baby.
Indeed, Kristina and Rodrigo have decided to name their baby boy… Hades.
If they chose this first name , it is because they found it “pretty” and for its “sound” . On top of that, Hades is pronounced the same in Colombian, Dad’s native language, and French.
However, this choice was quickly contested because an official of the civil status of Saint-Malo alerted the public prosecutor for a prima facie valid reason: in Greek mythology, Hades is the name of the god of the underworld, who inherited the kingdom of the dead. Thus, the Saint-Malo public prosecutor’s office considered that this first name was “contrary to the interests of the child” .
Justice vindicates parents
Finally, justice ruled and ruled in favor of the parents . This Friday, April 14, the family affairs judge of Saint-Malo rendered her decision and little Hades can keep his first name.
According to the judge, this first name has already been given in France and has not caused any problems. She also asserted that “the public prosecutor’s mythological references are not sufficient to establish that the name Hades would be contrary to the interest of the child or to his protection” and that it had “no ridiculous connotation or pejorative” .
This decision is a relief for the parents, who now hope that the prosecution will not appeal.
