Raising children can be a task in itself these days. New parents not only have to hear the opinions of their family members, but also have to put up with strangers on the internet commenting on their parenting methods. Jordan Driskell is a young dad of five quintuplets. Her quintuplets are five years old. As you can imagine, caring for 5 children of the same age can be quite stressful. Especially at age 5 when a child is curious and loves to explore. Dad of 31 years old, Jordan Driskell decided to find a creative solution to his issue. He bought leashes intended for children to control his rambunctious little children when they are together in public. In the past, Driskell had a 6-seater stroller that they used for their large family.
However, this would get boring very quickly as the children would be disturbed inside. The stroller was also incredibly inconvenient to take everywhere. This helps small children to wander and explore their surroundings when the family goes out without their father losing sight or control of them and therefore keeps them safe! Driskell posted a video of the family’s outing to the aquarium which sparked a lot of negative feedback against the parents. The video of the children on leashes went viral with more than 3 million views. Hundreds of people commented that the children were not animals and should therefore not have been leashed. Others commented: “If you can’t handle the pressure, don’t have so many kids. »
Others expressed disdain masked as advice: “Can’t you just raise your children properly? Talk to them about why running away is risky. Parenting and adolescent development expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa had a different opinion. She doesn’t think a leash will make your child think he’s an animal. And if the alternative to a leash is to stay at home, then of course the leash is a much better option! Dr. Gilboa said a leash is an excellent tool for controlling young or neurodiverse children in a public environment.
However, she said if a neurotypical child is not kept on a leash by the age of eight or nine and therefore has not developed listening skills, this could be a problem for some. By then, parents should be able to effectively communicate verbally with their children instead of relying on tools like leashes. Parents should have the freedom to parent the way they want without facing unnecessary judgment from society. What do you think about children being kept on a leash in public?
