In Canada, an old man was arrested for stealing bread and brought to justice.

The old man confessed his sin and said,
“I was so hungry I almost starved to death.”

The judge made a decision and said.
“You know what you stole and I’m ordering you to pay $10. Since I know you can’t pay, I’ll pay for you.”

Everyone was locked in the courtroom, the judge took ten dollars out of his pocket and demanded that the old man be taken to the treasury to make up for it.

Then he stood up and addressed the audience. “You are all criminals and each of you must pay a ten dollar fine because you live in such a city that an old man is forced to steal because of hunger.

In the courtroom they collected $480 and the judge gave the money to the old man.
And added his words.

“If you see that there are poor people in a city where rich people live, know that the rulers of that city are stealing people’s property.”
