Dejana Backo’s journey began as a child with questions about her unique condition, but as she grew older, she accepted her body and its capabilities. Despite being born without upper limbs, she has excelled as both an artist and an athlete, and recently reached new heights by becoming a wife and mother. Born on December 9, 1994 in Novi Sad, Dejana’s early interest in her physical differences evolved into a resilient determination to pursue her passions.
At age nine, she joined the Society of Mouth and Foot Painters, igniting her artistic talents. After completing her studies at the Design Art School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad, she exhibited her work across the Balkans. Known as the “girl with wings,” Dejana has become a symbol of empowerment in Serbia. Despite her physical challenges, she achieved remarkable success in sports, becoming the 2019 Para-Taekwondo World Champion, a groundbreaking achievement for Serbia. In February 2023, Dejana celebrated another milestone when she welcomed her first child.
Her decision to prioritize this new chapter meant missing the 2024 Paralympic Games, but she remains committed to sharing her message of resilience through social media. While art remains her passion, Dejana’s dedication to sport led her to pursue Para-Taekwondo in 2016, winning awards along the way. She believes in overcoming obstacles by maintaining a positive self-image and focusing on one’s own worth. Dejana acknowledges the impact motherhood has had on her sporting career, but approaches the challenge with determination.
She adapts to caring for her daughter with her legs and embraces the joys and responsibilities of motherhood alongside her husband. Her recent wedding marked a celebration of unconditional love and limitless devotion, as Dejana shared moments of her family journey on social media. Her story serves as an inspiring example of resilience and achievement despite adversity and shows the power of determination and love.
