Bear’s life hasn’t always been easy. Wandering the streets of Texas as a homeless person, the friendly dog found himself on the shelter’s euthanasia list. It seemed the bear had given up. Then he received the news that saved his life – and it happened at the last moment. Potential adopters have walked past the 11-year-old dog every day since he arrived at the BARC animal shelter in June, and it’s starting to take its toll.
“He was one of 28 lives that were euthanized that day,” said Madeleine Garvis, a BARC volunteer. “It’s amazing that a dog like him made the list. His personality is perfect, he is so calm and friendly. Surprisingly, Bear’s behavior completely changed when Garvis took him out of the kennel. “We found a dog who suddenly learned to shake, who loved being outside and who loved love,” Garvis said. See how the bear is completely transformed after leaving his kennel.
“We have so few opportunities to meet dogs and see how they behave on the street, which is clearly very different, as evidenced by Bear,” Garvis said. “Not a bad thing to say about the bear. He walks well on a leash, is calm, walks with a leash so loose that he practically falls off him.
The dog quickly became a favorite. Garvis was determined to find Bear a home before his time at the orphanage ended. “Are you kidding me about those eyes?!” I love him,” Garvis wrote on Facebook at the time. “As soon as we got out, he looked five years younger!” Showing Bear’s true identity outside of the orphanage worked.
The bear found its forever home an hour before the planned euthanasia. Now he lives a life full of hope, love and care.
